Patrons of Novosibirsk Philharmonic Society. To you personally.
The conclusion of this article sounds like a motto. Not because of love to mottos. It’s just because if reflections are known to everybody and the conclusion is directed to actions – it almost always sounds like a motto.
Reflection 1. As the majority of Novosibirsk citizens, I like to read and hear people mention my favorite city as the third capital of Russia. At least as the third city in size and importance.
Though, we know that by the size of Gross Regional Product (GRP), that is cost of all products and services produced in the city and its region, we are on 19 place in the country, and GRP per capita is on 36 place (www.gks.ru).
Capitalness is not a question of economics; it’s a social-political category. Scientific and cultural potential – this is what allows us to talk about Novosibirsk, as the capital of Siberia and a candidate to the third capital of Russia.
Reflection 2. It’s clear that the Siberian department of the Russian Academy of Science makes Novosibirsk the capital of Siberian science. But it’s not clear from the cultural point of view. Culture is a multi-faceted question, even in a narrow understanding of this notion. If to take theatrics, from many facets of Novosibirsk arts, then, to my mind, it stands on two legs. But these “legs” are asymmetric, unfortunately…
The state opera and ballet theatre is of course number one in the cultural potential of our city. The ballet and opera school perform in a wonderful building, which became a historical value and symbol of the city. The second “leg” is Novosibirsk Philharmonic Society and it can support the capitalness of the city by its powerful art package (let the art workers excuse me this term) of schools and collectives. But the property potential only promises to catch the artistic one. And it’s not only a question of a Governmental start of a new concert hall of Philharmonics.
There is money in the budget for the construction. But it will take years, comparable to a long construction process of a new hall, to equip the hall and musicians with new modern instruments. And what is a heart for any concert hall? Of course, a concert piano. “Steinway” costs 6 million rubles at the present euro rate.
Reflection 3. All of us love to feel ourselves needed. We love to help, patronize, fell our importance and need for the world. But the scales of this need are different, also, talking in special terms, due to differences of free individual cash flow.
But if there is a chance to feel yourself a cool patron of arts and a person thanks to whom Novosibirsk will prove its name of the third capital spending a couple of thousands rubles per month, it is worth doing so. Especially, if this step remains in the history of city culture.
Conclusion of these reflections sounds like a motto: “if you solved questions how to earn and spend a couple of thousands rubles – you should become a patron of the Philharmonics. Buy a “Steiway”.

After a talk in the Philharmonics during a jazz music festival in October I made a decision. The agreement of patronage appeared to be simply, and so is a template for a monthly debiting of money from the internet bank account. In a month, the money was debited from the card and credited to the Philharmonic account. There is a page on the site of the Philharmonics about patrons. The project of patrons’ room in the Philharmonic building is also ready.
After having invited many of my friends to this project, they faced a question how to do that with minimal time expenditures now and in the next months. Dear friends, it’s easy to do that with internet-bank.
And in a couple of years, when you come to a concert in a new concert hall, you will tell yourself and your child: “This concert piano is here thanks to my patronage…”
